How to bold text on Facebook

Group posts on a computer have a real bold button; for other Facebook posts, comments and the Intro, bold text means Unicode. What works where.

Quick steps

  1. In a Facebook group on a computer: highlight the words in the post composer and click Bold, Italic, a header, quote or list.
  2. Everywhere else — profile and Page posts, comments, the app — paste Unicode bold: type the words in the Facebook font generator and copy the sans bold line.
  3. Bold one hook line or phrase, and leave hashtags, prices and links in plain letters so they stay searchable and tappable.

Group posts have a real bold button — on a computer

Facebook’s help center describes formatting for one place only: posts in a group. Start a post at facebook.com/groups, highlight text, and the composer offers bold, italics, quotations, headers, and bulleted and numbered lists.

The same page says you can only format a group post on a computer. In the Facebook app on a phone the buttons are not there, so a group post written on mobile is plain text unless you paste styled characters in.

Use the built-in buttons whenever you can. Real formatting stays ordinary text underneath, so it is searchable, translatable, and read normally by screen readers.

Posts, comments and Pages need Unicode bold

Facebook does not document any formatting option for ordinary posts on a profile or Page, for comments, or for the Intro under your name. What you see as bold there is Unicode: letters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block that look bold in any font.

Facebook does not document Markdown-style shortcuts such as **asterisks** for these boxes, so do not count on them. The reliable route is to generate the bold letters and paste them, which the Facebook font generator does while keeping your line breaks.

Sans bold is the safest style. Script, bubble and especially Old English are more likely to show as empty boxes on older phones.

Keep hashtags, prices and links plain

A bold hashtag is a different string from the plain hashtag, so it stops linking to the tag. The same is true for @mentions, links and prices that people might search for. Our generator leaves #hashtags, @mentions, links and email addresses unstyled automatically.

Meta said in April 2025 that accounts posting long, distracting captions, often with an inordinate amount of hashtags, are shown only to followers and lose monetization. Nothing Meta has published says Unicode bold itself is penalized, but bolding one hook line reads better than bolding the whole caption.

Bold names are a different story

Facebook’s name rules do not allow symbols or characters from multiple languages, and styled letters are symbols in Unicode, so bold or script profile names are likely to be rejected. You can also only change your name every 60 days. Keep the name plain and put the emphasis in posts and comments.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bold text in a normal Facebook post?

Not with a button. Facebook documents formatting only for group posts on a computer. In a normal post, paste Unicode bold letters instead — they look bold everywhere the font has those characters.

Why can’t I see the bold button in my Facebook group on my phone?

Facebook’s help center says group posts can only be formatted on a computer. Write the post on a computer, or paste Unicode bold from the app.

Does Unicode bold work in Facebook comments?

Yes, comments accept the pasted characters. Keep it to a word or a line — a fully bold comment is harder to read, and screen readers that do not normalize Unicode may spell it out.

Will bold text break my hashtags on Facebook?

It will if the hashtag itself is styled, because a bold #tag is a different string. Bold the words around it and leave the hashtag plain; our Facebook font generator does that automatically.

Can I make my Facebook name bold?

Facebook’s name policy does not allow symbols, and styled letters are Unicode symbols, so a bold name is likely to be rejected. Keep the name plain; you can only change it every 60 days.
