LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook limits at a glance
The most-searched limits for LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook in one table. Each platform’s page has every field, the source behind each number, and which fields accept styled text.
| Field | Limit | Details | Styled text | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Post | 3,000 characters | Spaces, line breaks, emojis and hashtags all count. | Yes | Third-party |
| LinkedIn Post text before “…see more” | About 3 lines (2 on sponsored posts) | A phone shows fewer characters because its lines are shorter; a blank line counts as one of the three. Reference sites put it at roughly 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile. | — | Reports |
| LinkedIn Comment | 1,250 characters | Enter starts a new line; 2026 user reports say Shift+Enter breaks can be dropped and that breaks sometimes vanish until the comment is edited. | Yes | Third-party |
| LinkedIn Headline | 220 characters | Since August 2024 users report that styled letters fail to save with an “invalid characters” error. Plain separators such as | and • are reported to save. | No (reported) | Third-party |
| LinkedIn About section | 2,600 characters | Practitioner guides from 2024–2026 say styled text still works here. We have not tested it on a live profile, so check it while logged out. | Reported to work | Third-party |
| LinkedIn Connection request note | 200 characters | Free accounts can add a personal note to up to 3 connection requests a month. Premium members can add a note to every request (other connection limits still apply). | — | Official |
| Instagram Bio | 150 characters | Anyone can see your bio. Empty lines are squashed unless they hold an invisible character such as U+2800. | Yes | Official |
| Instagram Caption (posts, carousels, Reels) | 2,200 characters | Hashtags, mentions, spaces, line breaks and emojis all count. A line that ends in a space can lose its line break, so trim trailing spaces. | Yes | Third-party |
| Instagram Hashtags per post or Reel | 5 | Adam Mosseri announced the five-hashtag cap on 18 December 2025. He said hashtags help search but do not increase reach. | — | News |
| Instagram Name (display name) | 30 characters | Searchable, and Instagram limits how often you can change it. | Yes | Third-party |
| Instagram Username (@handle) | 30 characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, so no styled letters or invisible characters. | No | Third-party |
| Facebook Post | 63,206 characters | Long posts collapse behind “See more” long before this. | Yes (Unicode) | Third-party |
| Facebook Comment | 8,000 characters | Per comment. | Yes (Unicode) | Third-party |
| Facebook Intro (profile bio) | 101 characters | The short line shown under your name on your profile. | Yes (Unicode) | Third-party |
| Facebook Profile name | No symbols or mixed scripts | Facebook does not allow symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters, punctuation, or characters from multiple languages in names. Styled letters are Unicode symbols, so expect them to be rejected. | No | Official |
| Facebook Name changes | Once every 60 days | Only change your name when it is final. | — | Official |
Last checked: 9 October 2026. “Official” means the platform’s own help center or newsroom; “Third-party” figures come from reference sites and are not published by the platform; “Reports” are user and practitioner observations.

Why some limits say “third-party”
LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook publish only a handful of their text limits. LinkedIn Help states the 200-character connection note; Instagram’s help center states the 150-character bio; Facebook’s help center states its name rules and the 60-day name change. Most other figures — a 3,000-character LinkedIn post, a 2,200-character Instagram caption, a 101-character Facebook Intro — come from reference sites that agree with one another.
We label every number with the kind of source behind it and the date we last checked it, so you can tell a rule the platform has written down from one that is widely observed.
Styled letters: posts yes, names mostly no
Unicode bold and italic letters are accepted in posts, comments and bios on all three platforms. Names are where they fail: Facebook’s name policy bans symbols, LinkedIn’s name policy bans special characters, and users report that LinkedIn headlines reject styled letters. Instagram’s display Name is the exception and accepts them.
Hashtags, @mentions and links must stay in ordinary letters on every platform, or they stop working.
Frequently asked questions
Which social media platform has the shortest bio?
Of these three, Facebook’s Intro is the shortest at about 101 characters by third-party counts, then Instagram’s bio at 150 (Instagram Help). LinkedIn’s About section allows about 2,600.
Do line breaks count as characters?
Yes, on all three platforms a line break is a character. On Instagram, an empty line also needs an invisible character to survive, and that counts too.
Are these limits official?
Some are. The table marks each one: official help-center figures, news reports quoting the platform, user reports, or third-party reference figures. Third-party numbers are consistent across several sites but are not published by the platform.
How many hashtags should I use?
Instagram allows five per post or Reel since December 2025. LinkedIn and Facebook publish no number; Meta has said that captions with an inordinate amount of hashtags can lose reach on Facebook.
