How to change your WhatsApp name
- Type your name in the box above. Keep it to about 20 characters so the full name shows in contact lists.
- Pick a style row. Bold and small caps render on almost every phone. Cursive and sparkle styles look good too, but test them if your contacts use older Android phones.
- Tap Copy on the row you want.
- Open WhatsApp. On Android, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings. On iPhone, tap the Settings tab at the bottom right.
- Tap your profile photo, then Name. Clear the field, paste the styled name and tap the tick or Save.
Changing your WhatsApp display name is free and immediate. The new name appears in chat headers and group member lists right away. It does not change your phone number or affect your contacts' saved names for you.

To build your own: shorten your first name (Samantha becomes Sam or Sami), add a favorite word or initial (S.Nova), or use a trait that people already call you. WhatsApp shows the name alongside your phone number in contacts, so keep it recognizable.
Changing a WhatsApp display name is free and instant — unlike game renames. The only thing to check is how the style renders on someone else's older Android phone: send yourself a message first to preview how the name appears.
Where the name appears on WhatsApp
People who have saved your number see the name they saved, not your WhatsApp name. Your styled name matters most to people who have not saved you yet, which is why a short, readable style makes the better first impression.
| Platform | Paste into | Do not paste into | Length cheat-sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display name | Settings → Profile → Name | Do not use the phone number field | About 25 characters show cleanly in most contact lists. WhatsApp has no published hard cap — keep it short for readability. |
| Group name | Open group → tap group name at the top → edit | Do not confuse group name with your profile name | About 100 characters. Unicode works well. Group name is set by group admins. |
| About / status | Settings → Profile → About | Not a chat message | About 139 characters. Unicode OK. For longer styled About text, use the WhatsApp fonts page. |
| Messages / captions | Type or paste in chat | Do not use a name-length style for a long message | Messages accept Unicode freely. Use the WhatsApp fonts page for longer styled text. |

Styling your name or your messages?
This page styles the short name shown in contacts, chat headers and group member lists, the one you set in Settings → Profile → Name. Messages, group descriptions and your About line take longer text, and the WhatsApp fonts page is built for that. If you want both, style the name here first, then style the rest there.
Style tips — what works best on WhatsApp
Bold and sans-bold are the most compatible styles. They render on nearly every phone, look clean in chat lists, and stay readable in small text. If you want something more decorative, cursive and small-caps are next — they display on most modern Android and iOS devices.
Sparkle, hearts, and stars styles add symbols between or around the letters. Each symbol counts as a character and takes up display space. A name like ✨Luna✨ is five characters longer than Luna. Check how it looks in the preview before you save it — the generator shows the full length after styling.
Very decorative styles (bubble, fraktur, enclosed letters) look great in the generator but can show as empty boxes on older phones. If your contacts use a mix of devices, stick to bold, small-caps, or cursive for a style that works everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my WhatsApp name stylish?
Type your name in the generator above, pick a style row, and copy it. Then open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap your profile photo, tap Name, clear the field, paste the styled text, and save. The name updates immediately in contacts and chat headers. No app download or payment needed.
How do I change my WhatsApp name?
Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (three-dot menu on Android, or the Settings tab on iPhone). Tap your profile photo at the top. Tap Name, type or paste the new name, then tap the tick or Save. The change takes effect immediately. You can change it as many times as you like for free.
Is there a character limit for WhatsApp display names?
WhatsApp has no widely published hard character limit for the display name. In practice, about 25 characters display cleanly in most contact lists and chat headers before the name is cut off. Longer names may show in full on the profile screen but get truncated in smaller spaces. Keep your name short for the best result across all screens.
Do WhatsApp stylish fonts work on every phone?
Bold and small-caps Unicode render on nearly every modern Android and iPhone. Cursive, sparkle, and hearts styles look good on most phones made after 2018. On older Android devices with smaller system fonts, rare Unicode blocks can show as empty squares. Bold is the safest choice; test on a friend's phone if you are unsure.
Is WhatsApp stylish name the same as WhatsApp fonts?
They are different things. A WhatsApp stylish name is the short display name you set in Settings → Profile → Name — usually under 25 characters. WhatsApp fonts refers to styled text in messages, captions, and the About section, which can be much longer. Use this page for the name; use the WhatsApp fonts page for messages.
Can I use the same style for my WhatsApp group name?
Yes. Copy the styled row from this page and paste it into the group name. Open the group, tap the group name at the top, paste the styled text, and save. Group admins can edit the name; members cannot. Group names support about 100 characters, so you have more room than a personal display name.
Will changing my WhatsApp name notify my contacts?
WhatsApp does not send a notification to contacts when you change your display name. However, contacts who have your phone number saved will see the old name they saved, not your WhatsApp name, until they refresh or you appear in a new chat. Your WhatsApp name is what shows when you are not in their contacts.
